I customized a Raspberry pi for use by the Elderly. (SeniorPi). It is not so much a Senior Computer, as it is much simpler than that. We did if for our elderly parents, and we are trying to reach out to help others help the elderly.

For one parent it made reading possible again due to the high contrast/large print, plus Audio books when the eyes get tired. For another parent it made email once again possible, when all other apps on tablets and computers became too hard to use.

Extremely easy to use and empowers Seniors to:

  • Email(integrated slide show)
  • Landline phone support for caller ID (north america), call blocking, one touch dialing,
  • Large button touch pad.
  • Large print Ebook reader.
  • Audio Player with last played location saved for each file. (Music,
  • Audio Books, Radio Shows)
  • Internet Radio
  • Video Player + more

It is implemented with Qt Creator C++ code, and bash scripts. The whole development system and source code is included in the install script, to empower a 2nd support person to further customize the system for an individual senior's needs. The total download is 2.2MB and includes some sample Public Domain pictures, audio, and video. Just download to a USB drive , run the install script, and finish up by customizing some config files for phone numbers, and email contacts. Done!

All free, no ads, no spy ware, just want to help the elderly.

A pleasure to have you on board!

We tried an Ipad with my Grandad - it didn't work out . Far too gimmicky, so something like this should work a treat, he just wanted to check the weather and look at motorbikes. . . .

Sounds like a great idea ! Do let us know how you get on with it. My husband's 93-yr old mother is using a Linux PC quite happily. We had to write an email client (which we called Pop'n'Mom) for her and his father because they found Thunderbird too tricky and phone support was a nightmare. These days we have remote access when she messes things up :)

However the Pi is a fabulous bit of kit and this sounds fascinating !
