some kind of case is highly recommended. I used the packaging box for the case with my first Pi.
If you have a project in mind google, google, google and read through the results. There are a lot of people out there with Pi's, the chances are that anything you want to do has been done before (at least in part) and they've probably written about it.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, but try to figure it out for yourself first, and when you post your question provide links to the tutorial you were following and say where it went wrong. (Techie types are more helpful to people who have shown that they are trying to understand than to those that just demand information).
Break any project into a sequence of manageable steps, don't try to do everything in one go. get each part working individually before combining them.
