Hi.
I'm trying to control the temperature of a room and was wondering how to do it using a raspberry pi. Ive seen the pi & bashkit and wondered how easy that would be to operate but have also been looking at getting a Maxim DS18B20+ Programmable Resolution 1-Wire Digital Thermometer and a bread board and doing it that way. any ideas as to which is easier for a novice?

The easiest method for a novice would be breadboard + 1-wire sensor (DS18B20+) The Pi&Bash kit makes a more permanent solution than the temporary solderless breadboard approach.

Either of these will allow you to monitor the room temperature but how do you plan to control it?
What heat source / cooling source will you be using?
How will you activate that heating/cooling from the Pi?

Hi

I am trying to log Fridge & Freezer temperatures. I am using a DS18B20 whilst it is very accurate for the Fridge , it doesn't seem to work too well in the freezer at around -20+ , the sensor values don't match the probe values.

I know the spec sheet says it has an accuracy of 0.5 upto -10.

Any ideas on how to make it more accurate or any other sensors that would be more accurate for temperatures around -30 ?

Hi,

The DS18B20+ should be able to read temperatures of up to -55.C

However, these sensors can be suitable to outside interference from heat sources e.g. if you're using the sensor in close proximity to a resistor - that resistor can output enough heat to affect the sensor reading.

They can also self heat, if they're run on a high power supply
