PICO HV3.OA not charging

Post by dmadej14 » Wed Aug 08, 2018 11:41 pm

i just installed a Pico B+ 450 plus. the new instructions worked well. also updated the firmware to 38 with no problems. after a few days i noticed the FSSD stoped working. it appears the battery is not charging. i ran SUDO i2cget -y 1 0x69 0x20 with a return of 0x00 (charger not running) ups led is blinking once per second, bat light is on, charge light is off. pico status shows 2.7v. rpi voltage 5.1v. i have the 450mah batt. so i ran i2cset -y 1 0x69 0x20 0x01, then verified it was set to charge. but after an hour batt volt is 2.4v. charge led is still off. i also ensured the picofssd.service is running. where should i look next to debug this? thanks

Hi,

Could you please confirm your order ID for me?

You're running this on a "standard" version of Raspian?

Do you know if the battery has ever been charging?

Maybe try re-updating the firmware, and re-installing from scratch?

When I first installed the charge light was on, but I don't believe it was charging. the FSSD worked initially but only because the batt was fresh, I think. I left it on over nite with no increase in batt volt. I have it on a stretch lite completely upgraded. when you say "reinstall" do you mean simply walk thru all the steps again, then re-load firmware? no removing of anything, correct?

Yeah, my thoughts is that maybe the battery is a dud, and it's never charged. You've checked all the wires/connections etc.?

Yes, please walk through the set up steps again, and then re-load the firmware - maybe try the test firmware 0x50

If it doesn't work, I'll get a battery shipped out to you

OK, i'll try reloading everything tonight. I don't think it's a battery issue because I actually purchased two complete pico's. one from you and one from PiMod's direct. both 450mah batteries act the same. which leads me to a software issue.

So I loaded oxE3 (beta 50 firmware) and the charge lite now blinks very faintly once per second, let unit sit for a few hours and batt volt slowly dropped. this with the 450mah batt. then I installed the batt pack I intended to use. its a 1S3P holder w/PCM and three 18650 3650mah flat top batt's. I left it overnight and this morning it showed 3.6v (what it should be). very odd. charge lite is a faint blink, but appears to be charging. if you unplug the batt, system reverts to 2 min shutdown. set system to 60 shutdown and pull cable power, the unit does a FSSD within 18seconds. got me baffled. I might try firmware 35 or 32. see if they perform any differently. any thoughts?

I suspect it is a faulty li-po battery.

Just a heads up, when using li-ion battery, you need to change the charge mode on the PIco via the programme registers.

I'm also going to check that a 3 sell battery holder can be used. I think the maximum is 2, but I will confirm shortly.

Code: Select all

sudo i2cset -y 1 0x6B 0x07 0x51

Yes you should be able to use a 3 battery pack :)

Just double check you have the battery chemistry set correctly depending on the battery type you are using.

Try loading the latest new beta version of the FW as well.
