RPi3b+ heats excessively

Post by sk800 » Fri Sep 14, 2018 5:13 pm

Order ID: 237946
Raspberry Pi 3 - Model B+

I have just started using my RPi3b+.
It's installed in a ModMyPi Modular B+ case with your heat sinks (Heat Sink Kit GEN-0069) and powered using your power supply (MMP-0020).
After a very short time, the case gets very hot, as well as the power supply. This happens within minutes, even when the pi is idle and does not do any heavy lifting.

Could you run the following command in a terminal, and post the output please:

Code: Select all

/opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd measure_temp

Looks like the core temperature of the Pi is within its maximum threshold (85C)

Do you have a different power supply you could try? If the power supply itself is getting hot, then I suspect that could be the issue.

I suspect the Pi will get even hotter if I keep it on but I feel it might be dangerous. The power supply also gets quite warm. Unfortunately I don't have an alternative one. I use the one I purchased from you.

Looks like the power supply you purchased from us (nearly 3 years ago) is for the Raspberry Pi 2. The Pi 2 had much lower power requirements so I suspect the PSU can't handle the needs of the Pi 3 B+

I recommend you purchase a power supply properly speced for the Pi 3 B+ - https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi/po ... plies-1088
