Pi Zero USB Gadget Not Working

Post by radams15 » Sat Feb 02, 2019 5:32 pm

Hello!
In November I purchased a Raspberry Pi Zero (Not W) from yourselves, and lately I wanted to try the USB gadget mode, specifically g_ether (the USB ethernet device). I have followed both tutorials by gbaman (https://gist.github.com/gbaman/50b6cca61dd1c3f88f41 and https://gist.github.com/gbaman/975e2db1 ... e45e8fd40a), reinstalling Raspbian Jessie Lite 2016-05-27 for each method, but neither have worked.

I have tried on two different computers (HP elitebook 8570p and Lenovo Ideacentre Q190) on WIndows 10, Lubuntu 18.10 and Ubuntu Mate 17.10.

Device manager in windows detected nothing, not as COM ports, as RNDIS devices, or plugged in as USB devices.

In Linux lsusb is no different when the pi is plugged in or not and dmesg shows nothing happened. On both there is no new ethernet device.

I have tried to use three different USB cables, all of which work perfectly with file transfers on my mobile phone. I have been using a USB 2.0 port on all attempts.

I am plugging the micro USB into the correct port on the pi, the one labeled "USB" in the middle of the pi.

Order ID: 245065
Product Code: ZEROKIT-A

I believe that the device must be faulty, as I cannot see the device on either of my computers (all three OS'), and the USB cables work perfectly.

Do you have any further advice, or should I request a replacement?

Thanks for your help,
Rhys.

I have just tested the quick method - https://gist.github.com/gbaman/975e2db1 ... e45e8fd40a - Using the latest version of Rasbian Stretch Lite, and g_ether is working, so might be worth trying it with this version too.

Start by formatting the SD Card.
Flash the Rasbian Stretch Lite image - https://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian_lite_latest
Edit the config.txt file and cmdline.txt file as instructed.
Add the ssh file too if you wish.
When plugging the Pi zero into your computer for the first time, allow a good 2-3mins for the Pi to boot before checking to see if the computer has detected the device. (The LED on the Pi should remain solid once it has finished booting)
Check device manager, under "Network adapters" and you should see "USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget #2"

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Dave,
I have just tried the method with the Stretch Lite image you provided, but nothing has appeared in the device manager, as seen here:

(Using device manager on Windows 10, all updates applied)

Is there anything else that you can suggest?

Rhys.

How odd, guess something isn't quite right then.

I will have our sales team arrange a return for you.
