dynamode 7 port usb hub failing on boot up

Post by daveWelsh » Fri Mar 01, 2019 11:05 am

Invoice ID: 254402
Pi: 3B+ raspian
Hard Disk: Seagate 1TB 2.5"

Hi
When I start up my Pi with USB hub plugged into Pi (and Seagate plugged into hub) the Pi fails to boot up and goes into recovery mode. A snippet of the output from journalctl is attached showing the errors.
Kind Regards
Dave

Does the Pi boot ok without the HUB, and does it boot ok with the HUB plugged in, but the hard drive disconnected?

Are you able to try some other USB devices with the HUB.

It could be that the hard drive is drawing too much power for the HUB to handle.

Pi boots fine without hub plugged in
Pi boots fine with hub plugged in with no attached devices

Sounds to me like the HUB just can't handle the hard drive then I'm afraid. Hard drives are known for drawing a large amount of current, especially when first turned on to get the disks spinning.

Is the hard drive a full size 3.5" desktop drive or a portable 2.5" drive?

I'm assuming you have the HUB powered, with the supplied power supply?

The hard drive is the 2.5" and yes, the usb hub is powered on with power supply

Ok, that's strange that it can't handle a 2.5" hard drive.

I'll have our sales team arrange a return for testing

We have tested the returned unit and it appears to be functioning as it should.

It quite happily powers and runs a 2.5" hard drive with various other peripherals plugged in.

How would you like to proceed? I can either return the item to you or issue a refund.

Thanks, I would prefer a refund as my Pi would not boot (see 1st post) with this hub. I will purchase the 10 Port USB Hub - 5V 4A which has a higher power supply,
many thanks
Dave
